Trauma Informed Workplace Emergency Preparedness

A "trauma-informed workplace emergency preparedness" approach means integrating understanding of trauma and its effects into emergency response plans, ensuring that employees feel safe and supported during a crisis, and minimising potential re-traumatisation by providing sensitive communication and support mechanisms, while also considering individual needs and cultural sensitivities during an emergency situation.

Key aspects of a trauma-informed workplace emergency preparedness plan:

  • Prioritising psychological safety: Creating an environment where employees feel comfortable expressing concerns, asking questions, and seeking support without fear of judgment during an emergency.
  • Training for all staff: Educating employees on trauma-informed principles, including recognising signs of distress, using supportive language, and providing appropriate responses to individuals experiencing trauma triggers.
  • Individualised support: Allowing employees to access personalised support based on their needs, such as flexible work arrangements, mental health resources, or access to trusted colleagues.
  • Clear communication strategies: Using calm, clear, and concise language during an emergency, providing regular updates.
  • Cultural sensitivity: Considering the cultural backgrounds of employees and adapting communication and support strategies accordingly.
  • Post-incident debriefing: Conducting thorough debriefings after an emergency to evaluate the response, identify areas for improvement, and provide support to affected employees.
